New Career Courses: ODLS Helps Students Build Workplace Skills

For Ohio Digital Learning School’s students, a new school year means new opportunities to think about what comes after graduation. This year, they can choose from three new career courses to broaden their practical skills and earn industry credentials, all while discovering more about the types of work that interest them most.

Career planning at ODLS isn’t new; every student creates an Individualized Career Plan based on their goals. However, the new Microsoft, business, and sports officiating courses add even more options for students who are preparing for the workforce while still in high school.

Build Office-Relevant Skills With Microsoft Certifications

For students whose careers are likely to take them into offices, gaining experience in the Microsoft suite of products is invaluable. The Microsoft course provides the opportunity to earn associate-level certifications in both Word and Excel, two of the most common programs students are likely to encounter in their work. They have up to a semester to complete the program at their own pace, though live lessons are available if they need extra support.

Learn to Navigate the Business Landscape

ODLS’s new business course is made of two parts: Retail Industry Fundamentals and Customer Sales and Service. These courses teach students how to understand what customers need and how to communicate with them effectively. This combines with ODLS’s existing RISE Up opportunity, which provides industry-recognized credentials for widely applicable workplace skills. Many students will use what they’ve learned to thrive in retail and customer service roles, but the skills are widely applicable across industries.

Get Started in Sports or Healthcare

Students who are interested in athletics or health can choose the new sports officiating course. It includes preparation in areas such as CPR, first aid, blood-borne pathogens, and professional medical communication. For students considering nursing or other healthcare careers, this early opportunity can give them some foundational skills in the field and an opportunity to experience what the work may be like. For those who want to pursue sports, this track can earn them a credential to work as a referee for baseball, basketball, football, softball, or volleyball. Whether they are new to these sports or already participating in their local communities, officiating is another way to stay connected with their interests.
